A history of the looks that crowned Queen Elizabeth II as a fashion icon

when it came to Queen Elizabeth II‘s, it was always a case of fashion royalty meeting real royalty.

While Her Majesty, who passed away on September 8, will be remembered for having the longest reign in British history and a lifetime of service, her legacy will also include her history as a style icon. Whether she wore a gorgeous gown and jewel-encrusted tiara to a banquet or a monochromatic coat and hat combo to a public engagement, the 96-year-old monarch turned heads of fashionistas around the world.

“She needs to stand out so people can say ‘I saw the Queen.'” Sophia, Countess of Wessexsaid in The queen at 90 documentary on Her Majesty’s colorful outfits. “Don’t forget that when she shows up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say that she saw a bit of the Queen’s hat when she passed by.”

Queen Elizabeth II also knew the value of a good accessory and was frequently seen wearing her pearls, gloves, Launer bags and Anello & Davide shoes.
