Bill Maher Asks a Question a Meathead Can't Answer on 'Real Time' - Deadline

Bill Maher offers a “real time” version of Biden, midterms and fanfictions: deadline

Bill Maher thinks that Joe Biden is currently doing a good job. But he also warned against fan fiction as history, perhaps offering a contradiction that only he understands.

Maher started the Real time strong night with a one-on-one with country singer Trace Adkins, who also stars in the new Fox TV series Monarch with Susan Sarandon. Adkins sat down and said that Maher would occasionally tell a funny joke. Maher jumped. “We’re in, you can take your hat off,” she said, and followed up with “Oh, is that shit on your shoes?”

But it was all so much fun. Adkins is known as a conservative, which allows him to stay away from political discussions with the ultra-liberal Sarandon to keep the peace. “We did our job and stayed away from everything else,” Adkins said, which Maher saw as a formula the rest of America should adopt.

Maher couldn’t resist a quick grab at him, asking Adkins who won the last presidential election. “Joe Biden,” the singer admitted. “What did you expect me to say?”

Adkins is sober now, but he remembered how in his drinking days, when people forced him to drink at parties, he would notice that he would try to sleep with half the room and fight the other half, and it didn’t matter. what line did you get into

That cold blood is why Adkins said she wasn’t worried about the backlash on one of her new songs, “If I Was a Woman,” a song written with Blake Shelton that emphasizes traditional gender roles. “I don’t worry about it at all,” admitted Adkins.

The panel discussion brought together the founding partner and Washington correspondent of Disk Julia Ioffe and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham.

They first addressed a theme familiar to Maher, the fragmentation of opinion in the country. “I’m afraid the evidence from the last two years is that this looks more like the 1850s,” Meacham said. “We disagree on the understanding of reality itself,” calling it “an all-out culture war.” The root of the problem is that “there aren’t enough people willing to sacrifice,” she said.

Ioffe said that Americans are not immune to the basic human need for strong leaders with simple explanations, saying frequent statements about January 6the that “this is not who we are” was nonsense.

Maher seemed to surprise his guests when he asked what would happen to former President Donald Trump’s legal problems after the midterm elections. There was a long silence.

If “election deniers” win seats in Congress, Meacham said, “That is the beginning of the end of the constitutional order.” He predicted that would lead to “civic chaos.”

Maher filled the void, claiming that Attorney General Merrick Garland would do something because “Trump is guilty.”

Ioffe supported that notion, saying, “European countries accuse all the time.”

The conversation then turned to Ukraine, where Maher bragged that Biden was doing a great job because he “had been around the corner” and was patient.

Meacham agreed. “I think if you support American democracy, you support this president.”

Ioffe wasn’t quite ready to give credit, noting that “it’s still too early.” But she admitted: “Biden has done an amazing job in Ukraine.”

Finally, Maher’s “New Rules” editorial pointed to the rise of “presentism,” where everyone in the past is judged by the standards of the present.

History books aren’t supposed to be fan fiction, Maher said. But presentism is like being angry with yourself for not knowing at 10 what you know now.

He then went on a rant about how “everyone had slaves, including colored people and the Sumerians via R. Kelly. “Slave stands for Slavic,” she said, “and the Slavs were as white as the Hallmark Channel.”

“I’ve said it before, humans are not good people,” he added. “The capacity for cruelty is a human thing, not a white thing, even if it’s not part of the current narrative.”

Maher also called the Portland school system, where they plan to teach that the concept of gender was brought here by white settlers. “Not even Star Trek would attempt that story.”
