Caribbean Getaway: Why The Rosewood Little Dix Bay Tops the List

  • The British Virgin Islands, or BVI as club members will know them, were once traditionally reserved for those arriving by sea aboard their super yacht or flotilla. Today, luxury hotels and restaurants are springing up on the islands, giving us mere mortals arriving by air and land a variety of options to experience the high life.

    For our much-needed dose of R&R, we ventured to one of the region’s original hotels, considered by many to be the best hotel in the Caribbean; the newly renovated Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda.

    Built in 1964 by conservationist Lawrence Rockafellar, the hotel was purchased by the Rosewood group in the 90’s and after devastating damage from Hurricane Irma returned to glory after a 4-year multi-million dollar refurbishment. Today the hotel offers “barefoot Caribbean luxury”. Sophisticated luxury meets mid-century modern design and an eco-friendly outlook. The hotel group’s philosophy “A Sense of Place” can be seen throughout as the resort stays true to the history, culture and geography of its location.

    The Rosewood Little Dix Bay consists of 80 rooms, suites and villas, each sympathetically designed using natural materials to create light and airy living and a connection to the island’s tropical landscape. Every room features ocean views and not 1, but 2 dedicated butlers who cater to your every whim.

    We were greeted by Alson and Reddy, who took us on a tour of the 500-acre property before taking us to our one-bedroom pool suite, with stunning views of the white-sand beach and Caribbean Sea. Our suite came with a separate living room, bar, terrace, and pool, and the sumptuous bathroom offered double sinks and walk-in showers, a back-to-nature outdoor shower, and divine Diptyque toiletries (we won’t lie, it’s some may have found their way into our suitcase).

    Everything in the hotel exudes a refined elegance, people come to disconnect from their busy lives, to reconnect with themselves and with nature and to feel isolated from the stress of the outside world. 90% of the rooms at Little Dix do not have a TV and there is no nightly entertainment on offer, after a couple of days your body clock resets with the rising and setting of the sun and you feel gently lulled into a sense of relaxation . satisfaction – easy enough to do when you have 2 butlers and literally nothing to worry about.

    Dining at the resort is all about fresh ingredients, its simple food done right with 4 restaurants as well as poolside and beachside dining to choose from. All restaurants face the bay and offer a variety of local and international cuisines.

    Breakfast was included in the room rate and meant we could start the day with a selection of continental delights or indulge in the tempting a la carte menu. Whether it’s a healthy egg white omelet or a stack of calorie-laden French toast, they’ve got you covered. Breakfast is served in the Pavillion Restaurant each morning, where guests gather under the high, almost pyramidal, vaulted wooden ceilings and are met by stunning views and a nice balmy breeze. Trust us when we say there are worse ways to start your day.

    Restaurants rotate daily with the Pavilion serving comfort food and a mix of Indian-inspired dishes, for something lighter. The Sugar Mill offers a selection of Caribbean bites and raw bar or alternatively you can choose from salads, flatbreads, burgers or fresh fish on the grill at the Reef House. It was Mexican night during our stay and we can confirm that the tacos were a triumph.

    It may be controversial, but our favorite meal by far was the beachside dinner. At the touch of a button, the beach bartenders are literally at your feet with a list of cocktails that are crying out for you to try (our pick of the week was Pink Panther and Raspberry Mojito) and the resident mixologist (winner of prizes) from the hotel. Conjuring up new recipes every week, there’s always a reason to come back! The international menu of light bites delighted us every day and although we should have tried everything, we obsessed over the Shrimp Wrap with guacamole, lettuce, mozzarella cheese, pickled onions and jalapeno and the tomato and pesto panini with mozzarella cheese from buffalo (we can also vouch for the Beef Luc Lac and the black forest ham and Swiss cheese ciabatta).

    Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the Rum Room, an open-air lounge with a wide variety of cocktails (often, we imagine, rum-based), whiskeys, wines, and cocktails. It’s the perfect end to an evening as you curl up on the outdoor sofas around your own personal fire pit.


    We seem to have made it quite clear by now that the name of the game is relaxation and enjoyment at Little Dix and for us the beautiful stretch of white beach and crystal clear waters would have easily been enough to satisfy us. Throw in resident turtles and rays, an illusionary shark, and the local reef and it had us grinning from ear to ear. If you need a break from all the snorkeling, the perfectly placed pontoons with built in loungers were a revelation.

    If something energetic is more your scene, non-motorized water sports are available for free on the beach with catamarans, paddle boards, or kayaks to choose from. Or, alternatively, take a dip in one of the resort’s two swimming pools, try out a game of tennis, visit the fully equipped fitness center, or take a walk on one of several marked trails.

    If you have young children in tow, why not leave them in the friendly and capable hands of the Rosewood Explorers and allow yourself some well-deserved downtime?

    If reading that takes your breath away, then maybe The Sense Spa has your name on it. Book an evening treatment and arrive early to experience the beautiful sunset at the tiered infinity pool. Treatments take place in private cliffside cabanas, each overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel. The treatment menu is unique to Little Dix, combining local remedies and traditions with modern techniques from around the world. We opted for a signature massage and would visit every day if we could.

    If you are staying in Virgin Gorda then a visit to the baths is a must, follow our lead and hire a Moke for the day to tour the entire island and the various stunning bays before heading to Hog Heaven for a giant fix. pulled pork, burgers, and anything else you can drizzle with BBQ sauce and grill (not the most refined experience, but the views of Necker and Mosquito make up for it).

    If you’re looking for a change of scenery and want to dine outside the resort once or twice, we highly recommend the Asian-inspired menu at mayan coconutor take the ferry to Saba Rock – we didn’t get that far but we’ve heard good things.


    Let’s be honest, traveling halfway around the world by air, transferring to another plane and then hopping on a boat from the UK to Virgin Gorda is not the most sustainable way to travel, however there are things you can do to try to make the most of it. good. We fly with BA who have partnered with Pure Leapfrog to help offset their carbon footprint and most airlines offer a similar service.

    Once you’re in Little Dix, the hotel will go out of their way to try and make sure they’re doing their part. Approximately 20% of all fresh produce comes from the Chef’s Farm at the resort, no single-use plastics are allowed at the resort, and like many hotels, laundry is reduced to every 3 days or on request. The hotel is proud of its natural surroundings and works with local conservationists in protecting the turtle population and undergoing ongoing reef restoration work.
