chris rock57, has admitted turning down a request for him to return as host of the 2023 Academy Awards, according to the republic of arizona. The comedian apparently compared his return to the stage at the Oscars, where he was slapped by Will Smith last year, as if returning to the scene of a crime, during his comedy show at the Arizona Financial Theater in Phoenix, AZ. He also made reference to the 1995 murder trial of OJ Simpson when he reportedly noted that it would be like asking the late Nicole Brown Simpson to come back “to go back to the restaurant” where she left a pair of glasses the night she died.

Chris also reportedly opened up about the royal slap earlier on his set that night when he said it hurt and touched on how the actor portrayed the legendary boxer. Muhammad Ali in a movie “It’s bigger than me,” Chris said, the outlet also reported. “The state of Nevada would not approve of a fight between myself and Will Smith.”

Chris’s latest comments on his recent comedy show aren’t the first he’s made about the now-infamous slap in the face. He has been known to talk about the memorable moment on several of his comedy shows since the incident occurred in March. At a show in New Jersey in July, he reportedly said he wasn’t “a victim,” adding, “Yeah, that hurts, motherfucker. I shook that sh*t off and went to work the next day… I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut.”

In July, Will broke his silence by going to his YouTube page to share a video in which he publicly apologized for the slap. “I contacted Chris and the message he got back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will. So I’ll tell you, Chris, I apologize. My behavior was unacceptable,” he said, sitting and looking directly at the camera, in the video.

“I want to apologize to Chris’s mom,” he continued. “I saw an interview that Chris’s mother did. And that was one of the things about that time that I just didn’t realize. I wasn’t thinking about how many people were injured at that time. So I want to apologize to Chris’s mom. I want to apologize to Chris’s family. Specifically tony rock. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. And this is probably irreparable.
