Chris Rock Slams Will Smith’s ‘Hostage’ Apology Video on London Set – Deadline

London’s O2 Arena was shaken on Saturday night as Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock continued their European stand-up tour, including new comments about their attacks on stage. We were in the crowd.

Rock, who took the stage first, devoted a small portion of his lengthy performance to talking about Will Smith, during which he said, “Fuck your hostage video,” in an apparent response to the actor’s viral YouTube apology video. . Smith posted the apology on YouTube in July. This is the first time Rock has addressed the video directly in public.

As in previous sets, the comedian noted the stinging effect of Smith’s slap: “Yeah, that hurt. He played Ali. I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather.”

Rock again referred to Will Smith as “Suge Smith” in reference to former Death Row Records music executive Suge Knight, who is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence for voluntary manslaughter. He then quickly went on to say that he was back at work the next day after the slap and that he was not a victim before discussing a variety of topics, from Trump’s election to the Kardashian family’s dating habits.

Rock was followed by Chappelle, who referred to the time in May when he was attacked on a Los Angeles stage. Chappelle said that he is now wary of performing on stage because he can no longer tell if the crowd will be hostile.

“That was some scary shit,” he mused, before saying that Rock upstaged him that night by taking the stage and making a joke about Will Smith.

Chappelle then added that he doesn’t know what his response would have been if Smith had slapped him on stage at the Oscars, but he’s sure the actor wouldn’t have “enjoyed the rest of his night” at the awards show.

Chappelle took the stage to Radiohead’s police karma and spoke about a selection of controversial topics, including the strike by Netflix employees last year following the release of his comedy special. the closer in the serpentine Chappelle ended his introduction by imploring audience members to be themselves, unlike Smith, who claimed that he “made the impression of a perfect man for 30 years.”

“I just hope he doesn’t put that mask back on,” Chappelle added.

Rock and Chappelle continue their short tour of the UK and Northern Europe before bringing the show back to the US at the end of September.
