I think for us it’s very different because we’re light-skinned, Meghan told the singer. They don’t treat you like a black woman. They don’t treat you like a white woman. You fit in the middle.

Markle added:

If there is any time in my life that has been more focused on my race, it is only once that I started dating my husband.

The 41-year-old added:

So I began to understand what it was like to be treated as a black woman. Because until that moment they had treated me as a mestizo woman. And things really changed.

Don Lemon responds

Don Lemon, a CNN anchor, responded to Markle’s comments, saying he benefited from the privilege.

She comes from a privileged place where she didn’t have to deal with racism until she married a white man,” Lemon said. β€œAnd she has all this criticism and all this attention. And she suddenly understood or understands what it is to be part of a group of people, especially women in this country or in Europe, who are discriminated against.

Lemon also stated:

I actually think it’s an eye-opening podcast and I commend Meghan Markle for going there, although it’s a bit of a shock that at 30-something, she’s understanding what it’s like to be a black woman in America. It’s a bit surprising to me.
