Harry Styles Dazzles at ‘My Policeman’ TIFF Premiere – Deadline

On a break from his residency at Madison Square Garden, and shortly after the do not worry honey World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Harry Styles came to Toronto as his Amazon Studios Prime Video drama, my police, made its world premiere and received a standing ovation at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

And there was no meme social media spitting, no backstage drama; only good vibes for my police Cast and director Michael Grandage. The first stop was the Princess of Wales, where Emma Corin, David Dawson, Linus Roache, Styles and the filmmaker were among those who took the stage. They were then taken a few blocks to the Fairmont Hotel to collect their TIFF tribute award for Best Performance (for the entire cast; see their acceptance speech below). They then returned for a question and answer session at the Princess of Wales. And let’s not forget the press conference earlier in the day. All of this before Styles reported that he was flying back to New York to continue his concert. He arrives in Los Angeles on October 15 for a 15-night residency (15 nights!) at The Kia Forum.

my police tells the story of Tom (Styles), a policeman who finds himself in the middle of a love triangle with Marion, a teacher (Emma Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson), at a time when homosexuality was banned in the United States. the 1950s in Britain. Flashing back to the 1990s, Tom (Linus Roache), Marion (Gina McKee) and Patrick (Rupert Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. The image is based on the novel by Bethan Roberts (which, as Pete Hammond says in his review, was actually based on a complicated love affair between famed novelist EM Forster, her 40-year-old male lover, a policeman named Bob Buckingham, and Buckingham’s wife, May Hockey, who slowly realized that her husband had a long-standing relationship with Forster).

Styles said of working with the ensemble in the post-premiere Q&A: “I think having a real friendship base outside of the characters obviously allows for the friendship scenes, if you will; does not require much action. And in the most intense scenes, there is a lot of confidence and security. All of that benefits from a real connection.”

Before the film, Grandage shared with the crowd a personal story about growing up gay and his father’s wise words to him: “Someone spat the word queer at me on the playground. I got home and asked my father what a queer was. He had no idea. A queer son is a very unpleasant word for a homosexual. This was in the 1970s. That didn’t really help. I had to ask ‘What is a homosexual?’ There was a very long pause,” says the filmmaker.

“What he intended to be a supreme form of parenting, he said: ‘A homosexual, son, is a free spirit.’

Earlier today, during the TIFF press conference for the film, Styles commented on tackling the bold film: “The overarching themes are incredibly timeless. I think that’s why the movie works so well. The themes of love and freedom and the pursuit of that are incredibly relevant, no matter what time you want to place it in.”

Hammond said of Styles today in his review, “Between do not worry honey Y my police Styles is quickly proving that he is the real actor as an actor, and here he is very convincing as a man lost in deception with his wife.”
