Preparation is key. big brother 23 students derek xiao Y Claire Rehfusswho us weekly exclusively revealed that they were dating a few months after their stint on the CBS reality series last summer, they were serious about preparing before leaving to compete in the amazing race.
Although the product manager, 24, and the AI engineer, 25, were fan favorites on their first reality competition show, they say they “lost their minds” and “wept” when they were actually cast in the role. phil keoghan-race organized around the world.
“Her parents gave us, like, a whole an amazing race bootcamp,” says Derek exclusively us weekly about what they did to prepare. “They taught us to operate the gear lever. We had a rented car. They would literally blindfold us, put us in the back of their truck, take us to a random place, and then give us a map and say, ‘Okay, now you need to go home.’”
Derek had been chosen to compete in The challenge: the United States, a CBS spin-off of the long-running MTV series, so I wasn’t sure I could do both. In the end, he did, but it cut into his preparation time for the race.
“I had very ambitious plans,” he explains. “I am a very studious person, so the amazing race, this is a game that is almost totally in your hands. Aside from, like, a cab every once in a while, you can do tangible things to study for. There is no voting in the house. There is no politicking. It’s really, like, can you speak some of the languages?
Claire chimes in: “Can you read a map? Can you use a compass? with Derek adding, “Can you handle the shifter? There are many things. He had a whole game plan. I was like, ‘I’m going to learn Arabic.’”
She says she “made a really long prep list and then Derek was like, ‘Oh, I’m actually going to go on this other show.'”
Fortunately, it all worked out for the couple, who now live together in Los Angeles, as they spent the month between shows as “a full crash course.” In fact, Derek was trying to practice even while he was in Argentina filming The challenge: the United States. “I was like, ‘I really need to learn Spanish,’” she says. “Every time I would talk to a local production person, they would say, ‘So I know that’s how you say it in English, but would you mind translating it into Spanish? I’m just curious about myself. And I always wrote the translation.”
As for how they will fare in the amazing race, the couple “complete each other” and recognized their strengths and weaknesses. “The joke I always make is that Claire and I only had one bag and I was carrying it,” says Derek. “So she always told people, ‘I carried the bag, but Claire carried me.’ I think it was my physical endurance in some of the challenges. But then Claire has one of the best memories of anyone she knows. She has a great attention to detail and there are so many challenges where it is literally just attention to detail.”
Adds Claire: “Derek is weirdly good at a lot of things. If you see Older brother, it would be very good in random challenges. … I think we complement each other quite well.”
the amazing race premieres on CBS on Wednesday, September 21 at 10 pm ET.
