When Kim Kardashian’s Skims shapewear was finally released in the UK, there was a lot of excitement. The range of bodysuits, bras, panties and underwear have already garnered rave reviews in the US, along with reasonable prices (a bodysuit is £66) and inclusive sizes (XX to 4X). So he was anxious to see if it was all worth it.
I’ve now been trying the Skims underwear for about a year now, and I’m almost eight months pregnant now, so it’s safe to say it’s helped me through multiple body changes. Here is my honest review of Skims.
How good are Skims?
Honestly, Skims underwear is the most comfortable I own, and I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said I wear it an average of five days a week out of seven. I obviously have several styles that I wash! This applies both before and during pregnancy. I haven’t tried shapewear, focusing only on underwear (underwear is super comfortable too). Skims promises everything from “technically constructed shapewear that enhances your curves to underwear that stretches up to twice your size, our goal is to constantly innovate in the past and advance our industry for the future.”
I don’t know what the technology is, but it’s doing something right. I’ve always hated constrictive underwear with padding and underwire, and you don’t get any of that with Skims. Buttery fabrics feel like a second skin, although ‘feel’ is the wrong word as you completely forget it’s there once. My favorite bra style is the triangle bralette, although the scoop neck bra is a close second. I am normally a 32B, now a 32C and the bra is very supportive.
I’m not a fan of thongs, but I tried the brand’s selection and found that I didn’t care as much as other thongs, as the fabric hugs your curves without feeling restrictive. That said, I prefer the coverage of underwear and cheeky briefs. They stretch to fit you, without cheating and of course the skin colors make them perfect to wear under light colored garments like white dresses.
Obviously, I’ve now washed all my Skims underwear, and it didn’t really budge at all, either in color or size. All in all, a huge thumbs up for me.
Do Skims fit true to size?
I would say Skims is true to size. Before pregnancy I was a UK size 6-8 so I wore underwear in a size S. During pregnancy my hips have gotten wider and my breasts a bit bigger so I have gone up a size for both the bras and panties. , opting for M, which works for me. Obviously, if your breasts have grown more than a cup or two, then you may want to increase their size again.
Skims pregnancy shapewear is designed to change with your body during and after pregnancy. The collection includes maternity leggings and bodysuits with non-compression cores for a growing bulge.
I personally tried the supportive nursing bra and the high-waisted panty, the latter of which hugged my tummy without compressing it, basically just an extension of the panties in the rest of the collection.
As for the bra, obviously I haven’t started breastfeeding yet, but I can attest to its comfort. It’s specially designed for leak protection and features front snaps that open and close for convenient feeding, plus an interior elastic strap for shoulder stability.
