    A recent Headspace study found that just 7% of Brits believe they get a good night’s sleep, leaving 93% with below average sleep. Poor sleep can lead to irritability, concentration problems, and exhaustion, which is where meditation before bed comes into play.

    What is sleep meditation?

    You’re likely aware of the benefits of meditation, but sleep meditation is a whole different kettle of things.

    Meditation is broadly defined as intentionally taking time out of your day to train the mind to be more present. Sleep meditation, on the other hand, simply refers to using this same practice to experience greater calm, clarity, and satisfaction in your life just before bed, which in turn improves the quality of your sleep, explains Lewis Prieto. .

    “Scientific research shows that regular practice of meditation and mindfulness helps reduce stress and anxiety, which are some of the main causes of our sleep problems,” he explains.

    How can meditation help you zzze easily?

    Short answer: because stress triggers your fight or flight response and the stress hormone cortisol, which keeps you awake and doesn’t allow your body to experience fatigue. “This state of alertness creates a busy mind and sticks to whatever is going on at the time: work, kids, global pandemics, etc,” he shares.

    Have you ever wondered why you often feel more anxious once in bed? “The reality is that you are so busy throughout the day that you don’t notice these thoughts as much. Once you’re lying down and doing nothing, everything can feel amplified.”

    So meditation helps because…? “Meditation and mindfulness teach you how to put distance between yourself and those feelings, allowing the openness of mind for quality sleep,” explains Lewis-Prieto. It also provides a space for you to begin to understand the tendencies of the mind in more detail, that is, learn to let go of those worrying thoughts and to calm and ground a tense body.

    I’m new to sleep meditation, help!

    If you’re completely new to meditation, Lewis-Prieto suggests trying it first thing in the morning. Why? “This can be a useful tool to get used to sitting with your mind,” she explains. One of the first things he will notice if he starts to meditate is how busy his mind is and how often he gets distracted as well.

    “The mind is always, and has always been, busy and restless. Meditation simply gives us the awareness to see it more clearly and, in turn, calm it down.”
