On paper, there were no big surprises at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, as all winners were considered clear favorites or runners-up on most prediction lists. Still, the dominant presentation of Apple TV + ted lasso probably qualifies as a surprise.
Given the mixed reaction to the second season, the long time that had passed since its run, and co-creator/star Jason Sudeikis’ ongoing personal drama, it seemed the momentum had shifted away from the hit sitcom. Add to that that ted lasso won zero awards at the Creative Arts Emmys versus three last year, and lost the leading Casting In a Comedy Series category there to abbott Elementary, and it looked like the ABC freshman was in for a surprise; the last seven shows to win the Emmy Casting For a Comedy Series also took home Outstanding Comedy Series.

Abbott Elementary won the first major showdown tonight, with Sheryl Lee Ralph named Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series on ted lassoby Hannah Waddingham, who had won the category last year. It was a slight surprise as Waddingham had been considered the favourite. But Ralph was a close second.
But then ted lasso‘s Brett Goldstein restored the balance unsurprisingly repeating in the Supporting Actor field, and the two shows split writing (Fifth Brunson for abbot) and directing (Lasso’s MJ Delaney) until Sudeikis’ lead actor reprise set the stage for ted lassoit’s a big swell. Sudeikis seemed genuinely surprised at his victory, and rightly so.
A couple of other minor annoyances:
The great prizes push Watch out for Lizzo’s big grrrls It paid off: The Prime Video newcomer was the surprise winner in the Reality Series Competition category, breaking the four-year winning streak of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Tom again outwitted the Roy boys. Competing against peers Succession co-stars Kieran Culkin, who had been considered a favorite, and Nicholas Braun, matthew macfadyen came away with the win, becoming the first actor on the show to win in the category.
There were closures for Apple TV + Breaking offwhich was considered a contender in several categories, including directing Ben Stiller, and Only murders in the building, whose stars delivered arguably the best host banter of the night. (Of the three, only Steve Martin and Martin Shore were nominated, with Selena Gomez’s omission being one of the biggest snubs on Emmy nomination day.) A solid comedy contender also came up empty-handed. barry.
