The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer Explains Janine’s Choices

When it comes to Janine, madeline brewer knows there is more than meets the eye.

In the fifth season of Hulu The Handmaid’s Talewhich released its first two episodes on September 14, Janine refuses to break free from being a subservient servant under the aunts’ control, despite Esther’s insistence (Grace McKenna).

While Janine’s complacency may be confusing to some viewers, Madeline fully understands her motivations.

“I think it’s very easy to look at Janine and think she’s just toeing the line and following the rules,” Madeline told E! News’ francesca amnicker. “I think it’s very easy to think that she’s doing that. But there’s nothing Janine does for no reason. I think she’s a survivor and she always has been.”

To survive, Janine decides to try to get on the aunts’ good side.

“I think she sees herself as ‘if I’m useful to them, maybe they won’t publish me,'” Madeline argued. “Her most present anxiety of hers right now, when we see her at the top of this season, is, ‘Will I get published or not? Will they send me back to the service or not?’ Because if they send me back to the service, I will retire from life. She no longer needs to be here.”
