A video showing the terrifying moment in a packed fairground malfunctioning social platforms took hold over the weekend. The 30-second clip begins with the riders ascending to the top of the tower. Just before reaching the top, the trip lasts for a few seconds.
Then, in its usual way, it begins to free fall. But, things took a terrifying turn when speed increased, and the ride crashed into the platform below it. Reports say the fall was about 50 feet.
The video shows safety harnesses snapping open as screams fill the air. The decorative lights of the tower promenade were dislodged by the impact. Some riders stood up, while others remained tied in place.
On the ground, a few people stayed behind. Some ran out of camera frame. Dust from the park grounds rises into the air from the slam and runners.
TV journalist Nikhil Choudhary shared the clip on Twitter on September 4. The incident occurred at a traveling fair called London Bridge in Mohali, India.
By Tuesday, users had viewed the video more than 9.5 million times. At the time, Nikhil wrote: “16 women and children were hospitalized after the incident.”
According to nbc newsMohali Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsimran Singh Bal confirmed the date and number of injured in the malfunction of the tower.
Medical professionals treated people for injuries to the spine, nose, jaw and cervical area, according to The times of India. A fair organizer also spoke out about the tower’s malfunction.
“It appears to be a technical issue,” said Sunny Singh. “We have been organizing fairs in many places, but such an incident has never happened.”
