Woody Allen announces his retirement from the cinema at the age of 86 – Deadline

Woody Allen has announced that he will retire from the cinema after the premiere of his next film.

The 86-year-old filmmaker will start production on his latest feature film next fall and told a Spanish newspaper that he plans to make this his last.

In an interview with La Vanguardia before wasp 22to be shot in Europe, Allen said: “My idea, in principle, is not to make more films and focus on writing.”

He added that his next project will be a novel.

This isn’t the first time Allen has talked about walking away from the movie business. In a conversation with Alec Baldwin streamed live on Instagram in June, Allen said he plans to direct “one or two more movies” but also said “the excitement is gone” due to the decline of the theatrical experience.

In his long career, Allen has received a record 16 Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay. He has won four Academy Awards, including one for Best Director for annie lounge (1977). Despite his success, he has always been noted for avoiding award ceremonies.

In recent years, he has been blacklisted for many allegations made by his former partner Mia Farrow that he abused their son. Allen has always denied the accusations and continued to work.

His most recent film was rifkin festival, which grossed just $2.3 million and made its way to the US in a limited release. MPI Media Group handled the film, taking over from Amazon Studios, which closed its $80 million distribution deal with Allen in 2019.

Earlier this year, Allen outlined the next wasp 22 as “sort of a poisonous romantic thriller” and compared the film to his 2005 caper Turning point. The film will be shot in Paris with an entirely French cast.
